A Brief Biography of Noel

Born 18 January, 1932 in Manchester. Parents Stanley and Elsie Harrower. Went to Burnage Primary School and Heaton Moor College, Stockport Keen child actor and writer, following my father’s footsteps Had an adventure story published the year I left school - “The Risky Quest” Started work at 16, at Didsbury Library, Manchester and on a travelling library National Serviceman in Royal Army Service Corps 1950-1952 Sent to Suez Canal Zone. Employed as clerk GHQ, Middle East Land Forces There, at the time the Egyptian government broke the terms of the treaty State of Emergency declared. All soldiers ordered to carry arms, beware snipers Got permission from the War Office to make my own way home on demobilisation Flew to Malta, sailed to Naples, and overland thro’ Italy, Austria & Germany 1952. Studied and obtained A Level GCE and started Degree Course at Manchester Univ. Active in Students Union, drama, debating, student newspaper etc. Went to Lamorbey Park College, Sidcup, Kent to study for a Dip. in Careers Advice Started work with Warwickshire County Council Education Department as a Y.E.O. Employed as a Youth Employment Officer in Nuneaton and Solihull Appointed Principal Careers Officer at Solihull District Council 1960-65 Joined Hall Green Little Theatre, Birmingham and played in several productions Appointed as Principal Careers Officer for the City of Nottingham 1965-69 Joined Nottingham Little Theatre Club and performed many times at Lacemarket Th. Appointed Deputy Principal Careers Officer, Nottinghamshire County Council 1959 Became Chairman of Nottingham Branch of the United Nations Association Became the Nottingham Coordinator of the Million Minutes of Peace Project Went to India, to attend a gathering to mark the Million Minutes of Peace Project Had my play “Worlds Apart” performed at Nottingham and Derby Playhouses 1988 Married Jenny Johnson at St. Andrews United Reformed Church, Nottingham 1990 Retired from Notts. County Council 1991 having served as Acting P.C.O. twice Became Co-ordinator of the Nottingham Council of Churches Millennium Celebrations Became Chairman of Nottingham Interfaith Council 2001 Moved to Devon in 2004, settled in Exmouth, Jenny’s former place of residence Became an Elder of Glenorchy United Reformed Church 2006 Had my right leg amputated in 2012 at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Had my book “Uncivil War - twin tales from Nottinghamshire,” published 2014 Jenny and I celebrated our Silver Wedding in April 2015
